A heartbreaking incident in South Korea has left the nation in shock after an elementary school teacher fatally stabbed an eight-year-old student in Daejeon. The teacher, a woman in her 40s, confessed to the crime after authorities found both her and the child with stab wounds inside the school on Monday evening. The young girl was unconscious when emergency responders arrived and was rushed to the hospital, but she sadly did not survive.
Authorities suspect the teacher’s own injuries, found on her neck and arm, were self-inflicted. An autopsy conducted by the National Forensic Service confirmed the child, identified as Kim Ha-neul, died from multiple stab wounds. Investigations are ongoing as the country grapples with the shocking nature of the crime.
South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, ordered a thorough investigation into the case on Tuesday, urging authorities to take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents. In response to the tragedy, locals placed flowers and a stuffed doll at the school gate, which remained closed the following day.
At a police briefing, Head of the Daejeon Western Police Station, Yook Jong-myung stated that the teacher was recovering in the hospital following surgery. She had a stitched wound on her neck, which investigators suspect was self-inflicted. Meanwhile, authorities conducted searches of her home and vehicle, and forensic analysis of her phone was in progress.
Investigations revealed that the teacher had taken a leave of absence in December due to depression but returned after just 20 days when a doctor deemed her fit for work. However, she exhibited erratic behavior in the days leading up to the attack, including assaulting a fellow teacher. On the morning of the stabbing, education officials visited the school to look into that incident and recommended that she be placed on leave again.
According to her testimony, the teacher had bought a weapon on the day of the attack, intending to end both her own life and that of a child. She did not target a specific student but lured the last remaining child into a media room before carrying out the crime. The victim had been at school for after-class care before heading to a private art lesson, and her parents reported her missing when she failed to arrive.
Authorities are considering when to formally detain the suspect, as they must request an arrest warrant within 48 hours of taking her into custody. However, her medical condition may delay court proceedings. The incident has reignited discussions on mental health support and safety measures in South Korea’s education system as the country grapples with a rise in violent crimes despite its overall low crime rate.
South Korea, known for its low crime rate and strict gun laws, has recently faced a rise in violent crimes, including multiple stabbings. Expressing his sorrow, acting President Choi Sang-mok extended condolences to the victim’s family, emphasizing that schools should be places of safety.
